A Fresh Look

A Fresh Look- 5x5 inches, acrylic on gesso board

Several months ago I began this painting, but somewhere along the way lost sight of the vision. I even went so far as to wipe down everything I had done the last time I worked on it. Saddened, I put it away in the studio closet and forgot about it. I will never be exactly sure why I went into the closet at the moment I did, or why I chose to look in the spot I did, but there sat the painting waiting for me. Pulling it out and seeing it anew kindled a spark in my heart. It felt right when I placed it on the easel and began to paint. Once finished, I knew that "A Fresh Look" had done me good!  Secure this painting for your collection!

Bit of Mischief

Bit of Mischief- 4x4 inches, acrylic on gesso board

Look closely.  The mischievousness is in the twinkle of the eyes.  Truly wanting to be good, but unable to control the fondness for playfully causing trouble.  Here comes the adult ready to scold, but after one look in those eyes decides a "Bit of Mischief" may be alright after all.  Secure this painting for your collection!

Hope- 4x4 inches, acrylic on gesso board

I have hope! I cannot think of any sweeter words than these. Children understand hope. In the midst of some of the worst circumstances, they still hold onto it. What a beautiful gift it is for those adults, who despite leaving childhood behind, have not lost "Hope."  Secure Hope for your collection!

Shadow and Light

Shadow and Light - 4x4 inches, acrylic on gesso board

I do not like dark days full of shadow. I like plenty of light. Shadows though, are very necessary. They allow the light to shine richly and create needed contrast. I also do not like shadows in life. I would prefer a life filled with light only. Once again, I have to be reminded that the light in life would not be nearly as beautiful without those shadows contrasting against it, and letting it shine to its fullest!  Secure Shadow and Light for your collection!

Peeking Through

Peeking Through- 4x4 inches, acrylic on gesso board

Frustration was close at hand.  It could be started over from scratch.  Perhaps it could be re-worked. No, wait a moment.  Somethings there- a spark of life.  A glimpse of the initial vision "Peeking Through."  Yes, everything is going to turn out just as it should.   Secure Peeking Through for your collection!

Face Me

"Face Me"- 4x4 inches, acrylic on gesso board

I take pleasure in everything I paint. Portraits and figures, however, have always been my passion. How disappointing to attend college art classes and have professors discourage me from creating the type of art that I loved.  I actually gave up art in college because it became so disheartening.  I began to believe the falsehood, that painting portraits was a waste of time, and so painted everything but faces and figures. The day came though, when I could no longer suppress my hearts desire.  I had to "Face Me" and accept that my passion is to paint the human soul peeking out through each visage.  In doing this I am truly happy.  Secure Face Me for your collection!

Red Lipstick

"Red Lipstick"- 4x4 inches, acrylic on gesso board

There's just something about "Red Lipstick".  Available in shades as various as the women who wear it, the color red makes a statement.  I like to think of it as a statement of fearlessness and strength.  A woman who wears red lips, regardless of age, will always be beautiful!

Bearly There

"Bearly There"- 4x4 inches, acrylic on gessobord

In my earlier life I struggled with wanting to please everyone. This of course is impossible. I, however, did not learn that until I had suffered quite a bit of heartache. This can be especially hard as an artist offering your very best to family and friends who unknowingly reject it. So often I felt that I was "barely there". Misunderstood and unable to offer something valuable, I almost gave up. Thank God I did not! I finally realized not everyone would value what I did. In understanding this, I changed direction and concentrated on connecting with those who shared the same interests. No longer am I "barely there"- surrounded by support, warmth and love now I am "Bearly There".

"Precious" -4x4 inches, acrylic on gessobord

I have a tendency to make things more complicated than they really are. In recent years I have learned to see beauty in the simple things. There are times though, where I fall back into the struggle of wanting to overdo. Even while creating this painting, I kept finding myself going back and adding fancy, unneeded brushstrokes. Funny thing is, it didn't make the painting better. I ended up wasting time and wiping off the offensive brushstrokes. Once again I realized that when I allow things in life to get too complicated, I lose something "Precious".

"Warmth"- 4x4 inches, acrylic on gesso board

There is a longing for real affection and kindness. The sensation of being warm in a cold place can feed the soul, especially if the cold place is isolation. Enthusiasm and genuineness go a long way in creating true "Warmth"- the kind that revives both heart and soul.  Secure this piece for your collection!

Being Me

Being Me- 4x4 inches, acrylic on gesso board
Pouring over art books filled with gorgeous paintings by masters both dead and living, I often find myself sighing. A long, drawn out sigh that echoes the thoughts in my head- oh to paint like that! I once lamented to a friend that I wished I could have just a tiny bit of the talent Sargent possessed. "You were never meant to be another Sargent" she said "You were meant to be you and do it like no one else." Though I still strive to improve myself with each painting, and will never give up studying the masters, I love painting the song that only my brush knows how to sing. I have embraced "Being Me."

Subtleness - 4x4 inches, acrylic on gesso board

There is an art to subtleness. Too much in this world can be bold, brash and overwhelming. What about the delicately complex and understated? Not easily understood is not always a bad thing. Sometimes it is a very beautiful thing, that draws one in using clever and more indirect methods. "Subtleness" has the ability to beckon. Secure this piece for your collection!

The Veil

The Veil- 4x4 inches, acrylic on gesso board
There is no point in attempting to give words to the story expressed in "The Veil". Words are inadequate. Everything I want to say has already been spoken using paint. It is a beautiful story and I love sharing it!  Secure this piece for your collection!

"Carefree"- 4x4 inches, acrylic on gessoboard
The world seems to be changing so quickly. It can be overwhelming at times. There needs to be a place of refuge where one can recharge and then emerge ready to face it all again. Maybe not even a place, but a memory. A memory of what it was like to be "carefree", casting all anxiety and burden on stronger shoulders. Secure this piece for your collection!

Winter Without

WINTER WITHOUT- 4"x4" acrylic on gessoboard

Winter comes to us all, whether it is the season without or the season within. Many of us have endured winters of the heart. A time where the soul seems to wither away inside. The darkness, cold, and bitter silence can be difficult to survive. Thank God for hope. With hope, it is possible to endure this season and keep "Winter Without". Secure this piece for your collection!

"The Artist"- 5x5 inches acrylic on gessoboard

Every artist has a story. Mine is pretty straight forward. For as long as I can remember I have been an artist. I never felt the need to become one because I already was. What else could I be? It would be like asking a tree to become a tomato. It is impossible. However, a tree can grow and be used to enrich peoples lives, perhaps through providing shelter as a house. I am an artist, but I will never stop growing and reaching- becoming a better artist while touching people's lives along the way.

Glimmer- 4"x4" acrylic on gessoboard

I love words! There are the words that immediately conjure beautiful images in my mind. However, I love paint even more than words. I have found that it is a far more effective form of communication for me. I can tell a story with one painting that I would never be able to tell no matter how many words I used. I give you the story of "Glimmer", in the hope that it will speak words. Secure this piece for your collection!

LOOKING AHEAD- 4"x4" acrylic on gessoboard

Creating a piece of art is not always an easy experience. In fact, more often than not, it is a personal struggle to translate a vision into reality. There are numerous occasions where I would like to walk away from a painting and say no more. I simply cannot. I am always drawn back, always "Looking Ahead" to what I know is attainable if only I will persevere.  Secure this piece for your collection.

FEATHERS- 4x4 inches acrylic on gessoboard
Sometimes an idea needs to simmer. I had started a painting based on this model almost a month ago and was not pleased with it's composition or coloring, SO I gessoed over it and painted something else. However I did not forget about it. I simply put it on my minds back burner to simmer. All of a sudden I knew! My model is a young woman full of life, so much so, that only one of her eyes needs to be revealed in order for the viewer to join in her celebration of everyday moments such as "Feathers".  Secure "Feathers" for your collection!

MIST-4"x4 acrylic on gessoboard
"Mist" is a word that evokes many feelings and ideas, in addition to its literal meaning. It creates so many stories and ideas for me, that I could not help but put one of them down on canvas. Now it's your turn. Go ahead and let your imagination run wild deciding what "Mist" means to you!  Secure "Mist" for your collection!

ADORNMENT  4"x4" acrylic on gessoboard

I admit it- I love earrings! I always have. Earrings are something that add attractiveness. Most everyone wants to be attractive. As much as I love earrings though, I know that there are far more important things that make people attractive. Kindness, gentleness, sympathy, and love just to name a few. As Audrey Hepburn said "The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries or the way she combs her hair." "Adornment" is so much more!

PIXIE- 4"x4" acrylic on gessoboard

Growing up I was the one who loved movies and books that featured leprechaun, fairies, and sprites. I used to love drawing them, letting my imagination run wild during the process. Adults can still enjoy being creative. All you have to do is let yourself dream. Is "Pixie" a child or a fairy- that is for you to decide!  Secure 'Pixie" for your collection.

HIDDEN- 4"x4" acrylic on canvas board

I love mysteries! Trixie Belden was my absolute favorite series as a young person. After that, it was Agatha Christie's Books. Lot's of us want to be kept in suspense. We want to let our imagination run wild and dream up our own stories. Not too many details, just a hint. Everything doesn't have to be revealed all at once. In fact, it is more fun when some things are kept "Hidden."

Braided-  4"x4" acrylic on canvas board

I am in the season of life where I have become an embarrassment to my teenager. Apparently, it doesn't take much. I thought a weekend swim meet was the perfect place to find models and snap reference photos for future paintings. He did not. He refused to acknowledge me. Despite his disgust, I enjoyed meeting new people and gathering great resources so that I could create pieces like "Braided".   Secure "Braided" for your collection!

HERE I AM- 4"x4" acrylic on canvas board

On certain pieces, the artist knows from the very first brushstroke that the painting is going to work. It comes together effortlessly. The face emerges bit by bit until it is clear, he/she has arrived. Now it is up to the viewer to write the rest of the story~

AMERICAN GIRL 4"x4" acrylic on canvas board

I have always laughed at the saying "Painting oneself into a corner." Well in a manner of speaking, that is what happened to me while painting on this piece. I was happily working on the finishing touches, when suddenly I had the thought "where am I going to sign my name?" I was not about to put a signature on her face, and I loved all the strokes of light and hair. I even played with the idea of leaving my signature off. Finally I took out my teeniest, tiniest brush and signed it in the top left corner. In the end, I don't think it took away from "American Girl" at all!

COMPOSED- 4x4 in acrylic on canvas board

Everyday we are subjected to a message that says in order to be satisfied we need bigger, and more. The idea occurred to me that more and bigger is not always better, especially when it comes to art. Would it be possible to create a series of miniature paintings that spoke just as powerfully as larger pieces? I decided to challenge myself and do just that. I have found great joy in creating this series. "Composed" shows that 4x4 inches can be just as impressive as 48x48 inches!

"Blessing"- 4x4 in acrylic on canvas board

I had gone into my "zone" and was passionately working on this painting, when the power went out. My studio is an awesome place to be, until the air conditioning stops. Then it becomes an oppressive, heat filled room, where I can barely think. Forced to stop, I decided to start again fresh in the morning. When I came back into the studio the following morning and looked at the painting on my easel, I realized in amazement that all that was needed was one last stroke to finish. The power outage was indeed a "Blessing" in disguise!

Plein-Air Flowers

"Plein-Air Flowers" 6.75"x12" acrylic on linen

Right before I fell asleep last night I came up with an idea for a plein air painting. I had been eyeing the flowers along my front walkway, pondering what could be done with them. So this morning I headed outside. It is not always easy to paint with acrylic in full sun (and I don't like the new open acrylic), but I was determined to give it a try. Across the street the tree men had arrived and were beginning to cut down a large tree. I could hear the foreman yelling out encouragement to the guys. "Great job!"- "Keep it up!" - "It's coming along great!" How could I help but paint better and with more assurance with all of that encouragement coming my way!

Waiting for a Friend- 8x8 Acrylic on Linen

Once again I am mesmerized with the aspect of the human face.  My goal here was to simplify what I saw in front of me, without losing the power of her expression.  I achieve this through color, texture, and lost and found edges.  I too remember "Waiting for a Friend."

Snow Angel- 11x14 Acrylic on Linen

I have loved painting faces for as long as I can remember. I also love creating in a looser  impressionistic, but representational style.  Nothing excites me quite as much as seeing color and texture on a canvas.  This painting has it all, color, texture, and the human face.  My hope is that just by seeing this piece, a heart is deeply enriched! Secure Snow Angel for your collection

Verity- 12x12 Acrylic on Linen

Painting the human face and all its emotions is a challenge I love!  Verity means the state or quality of being true.  I chose this title because the figure represents the true quality of youth, and this painting represents my true style. With every brushstroke, this quality of being true is worked into the painting.  When it is finished a piece that enriches hearts and lives has emerged!
