Out of all of the Nativity's that I have painted, this one has to be one of my favorites!! I love how the paint looks on the textured canvas. I also love the bright light next to the dark night. But my favorite part is the hearts above baby Jesus. I did not knowingly paint those, and I see them as a clear fingerprint of God. "The Art of Caregiving"

"The Art of Caregiving" show runs through December 7th at the Wings Gallery inside of the West Clinic. This is a fantastic show because if an artist sells a painting, 30% of the sale price is donated to the Wings Cancer Foundation.

I am honored to have four of my paintings featured in this show. I hope that they will bring pleasure to those walking through the gallery in the coming weeks.

Never Let Fear Get In Your Way

I was thoroughly disgusted with the painting in front of me! I was afraid to keep working on it, for fear of ruining it, and I was afraid to start all over. All of a sudden it dawned on me that fear was getting in my way. How many times had I encouraged my students not to let fear govern their brushstrokes, and here I was succumbing to the same thing. It was time for a new mindset! As quickly as I could, I grabbed a fresh canvas and looked through my photo's for a bit of inspiration. I found one. I knew this painting would be more of an impressionistic piece, so the photo would simply serve as a guide. Inspiration was suddenly in the air. I squeezed out fresh paints as quickly as I could. I was ready to start painting now and I didn't want anything to stand in my way. The paint went on the canvas so quickly, I wasn't even sure it was my hand putting it on. It made me think of something I had once read~ "You are God's paintbrush, God's pen and God's body to dance upon the earth and bring about the new." Another thought came to mind. I had read this one too~ "If we make a god of perfection, we risk pushing ourselves into a creative desert. We are afraid to try because we are afraid we won't be good." I was done with fear! I knew I was short on time and I could not leave until this painting was done. I might never get this inspiration again. Faster and faster my brush went. When I ran out of paint, I agitatedly squeezed more on the palette. It was coming, I could see it now. Finally I stepped back from the canvas and really looked at the painting for the first time. Wow! It was exactly what I had imagined it could be. My studio no longer had an atmosphere of fear but of joy and accomplishment!

What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?

I was asked that question as a little girl. It wasn't an unusual question to ask, but as a child I remember thinking to myself,"How funny to ask me that. I am already an artist". It was just that simple. I was an artist, I was going to be an artist, and there was no reason to think otherwise. I have never wanted to do anything else. I know there are a lot of other artists who started off in different careers, and then switched over to art, but that was not the case with me. All I ever wanted to do was create art! I loved painting and drawing as a child. I could express myself with my pencil in a way that I could not express myself with words. It was such a joy to go into my own little world and forget all of the real world "problems". I started off with markers, crayons, and pencils, and then progressed to paints, pastels, and pen and ink.

I remember the first painting I did in oil paints, I felt as if a whole new world had opened up to me. I am including a photo of it in this post. It was done on canvas paper with a brush and palette knife. I was 11 yrs old. at the time. I had just started taking art lessons from a neighbor who lived across the street. Her name was Grace Barnes, and she was a amazing artist. The time I spent with her was a magical time. I loved seeing her paintings. I loved smelling the smell of paints and turpentine. Best of all, I loved seeing what she could do with the paint brush and palette knife. I was so eager to learn to do that too. She would always insist that we take a break during our lesson and have cinnamon rolls. I will never forget that. Art and cinnamon rolls......what a wonderful combination!!

Looking back on my life, I can see that even though there were times where my art had to be put on a back burner (in order to be a mom), I never wanted to pursue anything else. I always knew I would come back to my beloved art. I cannot imagine life without being able to create. I cannot imagine being anything other than an artist. I know without a doubt, that this is what God created me to be, and I feel blessed!!!

Once Upon A Time........They asked for the portrait lady

I thought it would be a typical Saturday in the shop as I sat painting at my easel. This was back in the day when my studio was located in a strip mall shopping center. Something caught my eye, and I turned around in time to see a car pulling into the parking space in front of the shop. Three teenagers got out of the car. Perhaps I should say, three very hip teenagers got out of the car. My first thought was that they were lost. I greeted them as they entered the shop, and they spent a few minutes looking around. Two boys and a girl. Finally after hesitating, one of the young men looked at me and asked "Are you the portrait lady?" My face must have registered surprise, because I wasn't quite sure how to answer that one. "Yes....I do paint portraits" I smiled. I could tell he was nervous.....I had guessed that the other two were his friends, there for support. "No, I mean are you the portrait lady who paints portraits of people who have died? I have heard about you." Whenever people tell me that they have heard about me I automatically think of the pirate Jack Sparrow in the Disney movie. When told that he was the worst pirate that the soldier had ever heard of, his reply was "But you have heard of me" :) LOL

Now I was very interested in this young man. What had he heard, and what did he want? I am guessing he was about sixteen. He started to tell me the story of his girlfriend, who had just a few weeks earlier been killed in a car accident. I had actually seen the story on the news. He had a photograph of her and was hoping that I would be willing to paint her portrait. I hesitated. I did not paint portraits for everyone who asked. There was no way that I could do that . When I did paint portraits as a gift, usually it was for a parent who had lost a child, although there were exceptions. I was ready to turn the young man down, and conviction came. God whispered in my ear and told me to take a good look at these three young people. I was worlds away from them and could not easily relate, but here was a chance to reach out and touch their lives. I will never know all of the reasons why, but I knew in that moment that I was being called to paint this young woman's portrait.

I painted the portrait for the young man, urging him to someday give it to her parents. I knew that he would move on in his grieving process, and it would be a wonderful act on his part to present this to her family as a gift. I do not remember this young woman's name...I am sure he told me, but I have forgotten. I don't even remember the young man's name. I am sure I wrote it down, but have no clue where it went. My hope is that he did give the painting to her family......... but I have left that in the hands of God.

It was a Thursday that I will never forget!!! I tried to calm myself as I stood in the hallway of Tipton Rosemark Academy. The students, 6th-12th grade, were filing into the gym for chapel service. I entered also, and sat down next to some of the facility. I scanned the group and recognized my thirteen year old son and wondered how he would react to today's speaker. Such a large group of kids.......was I out of my mind......no turning back now. Off to the side, sat Josie Grays family. I could see the grief in their faces, and hoped and prayed I was doing the right thing. It had only been a little over a month since the fourteen year old had died from cystic fibrosis. This chapel service was in honor of her. In the front of the gym stood an easel with a cover over it, waiting to be unveiled.

And now it was time. The vice principal was introducing the speaker of the day. With a deep breath I got up and faced the students of Tipton Rosemark. Oh the memories that flooded back as I looked out at them....those who were in the IN groups and those who were not. Sitting in front of me on that first bleacher was the image of the girl I used to be in high school. So misunderstood......not at all popular......not pretty enough, or smart enough, or well dressed enough, or funny enough. The only thing I had enough of was awkwardness. I began to share my journey with these students. How God had taken a nobody and turned her into a somebody. He had taken the weak one and made her strong. He had turned the ugly duckling into the swan. He had imprinted the verse Matthew 16:24,25 so deeply on my heart that I would never be the same again. I wanted to give of myself to others.

More than anything, I wanted to encourage the students to follow God's calling and use their talents to help others. I wanted them to know that in His eyes they were beautiful and full of potential. I didn't want them to throw their lives away, or hate themselves, as I had for so many years. After I had finished speaking, I sat down and the vice principal took the cover off of the easel. There stood a 16x20 portrait of Josie Gray. Her parents were invited up and presented the gift that I had wanted them to have. I could not do it myself......I had already put so much emotion into painting it. After that, it was a whirlwind. When I finally returned to my car in the parking lot, I sat in silence. I had deliberately left one part of the story out. I had not shared with the students that that afternoon I would begin the process of relocating Chantel's Originals to my home studio. I was very uncertain of my own future again. I knew that when I spoke those words about putting all your hopes and dreams into God's hands and trusting Him with them............ that I would actually have to do it....................and that is another story...............

The first 20 years of my married life were spent moving throughout the U.S. and overseas. During those years I continued to create and sell my art, but it wasn't until September of 2006 that I was finally able to stay in one place long enough to open a business of my own. If I were to be completely honest however, opening a business was the last thing I wanted to do. After all, anytime you take a risk there is a chance of failure. I didn't mind failure in my private life, but the idea of a public failure did not appeal to me at all. Having considered this, I made up my mind that opening a business was not going to be in my future. Yet here I was preparing to do just that. Why??? The answer was simple. I knew without a single doubt that God was calling me to take a risk and open "Chantel's Originals".

On September 28th of 2006 "Chantel's Originals" opened it's doors for the first time. Everything in this shop had been either hand painted or created by me. It is hard to remember all of the items that I carried, because there were so many. I had original art, and handpainted furniture, along with t-shirts, vases, candleholders, totes, journals, clocks, and the list could go on and on. Many of the pieces were created using a special decoupage process that I had developed. One of the reasons that I loved "Chantel's Originals", was that it provided the money that I needed to continue painting portraits without charge for families who had lost a child. For a while the store was very successful and I was very happy!!! The Commercial Appeal, along with several other local newspapers, wrote numerous stories about "Chantel's Originals". I was so grateful that God had called me to move out of my comfort zone.

Then everything changed. The economy went bad. I continued to pour everything I had into the business, but it wasn't enough. The money was still going out, through the "portrait gifts", but there wasn't enough money coming back in. And then, one day I knew without a doubt that God was telling me the time had come to close the shop. I did not want to listen. I fought against what I knew I was supposed to do. I sat in a dark closet and wept!!! But in March of 2009 I closed the doors of "Chantel's Originals". Looking back, I am not sure how I made it through those very dark days. Not wanting to let go of so many items that were precious to me, I created a home studio that was absolutely stunning. The problem was that I didn't have the heart to do anything with it. God had asked me for the ultimate sacrifice, and I had given it to Him, but it wasn't with a joyful heart. I didn't have any heart at all. I began to grieve the loss of the shop in a way that I cannot explain. I know it was just a business, but I had poured my heart and soul into that business. I could not seem to separate myself from the loss of the shop. As far as I was concerned, I was lost too. I hid from people because I could not bear to talk. I cried so much, that there were no tears left. What was I without my art? What would I do with myself?

Somewhere in the darkness God came to me. He wrapped me in His arms and held me. He took away the anger and the bitterness, and He gave me joy instead. He restored my heart to me. And miracles of miracles, "Chantel's Originals" was not lost!!! The business continued out of my home studio. Not only did it continue, but it grew and was more successful than it had ever been!!! Opportunities rose up before me that left me speechless. It has been amazing to watch my business, and myself grow!!! I have truly been blessed. I have just one regret....I wish that I had trusted God and given my sacrifice with a joyful heart. I love the verse in the Bible where King David says that he will not give the Lord his God a sacrifice that has cost him nothing.

Once Upon A Time....It All Began With Samantha

We all have life stories to tell. Life is much more interesting than fiction could ever be ( having said that I must confess I am an avid fiction reader). One of my stories began with a young teenage girl named Samantha Williams. She was about thirteen when she was diagnosed with cancer. I was singing in the church choir at the time, and could see her in the front row surrounded by all of her friends. That made a huge impression on me. I wanted to do something for her family, but nothing seemed to be right. At the time I was painting landscapes and a few other commissioned paintings, along with decorative nicknacks. It didn't seem appropriate to give a landscape painting or a nicknack to a family who might be losing their daughter to cancer. In the midst of this, I found out we were going to be moving. Unfortunately, I had to begin to focus on making a move across the country with two small children of my own.

After all was unpacked and settled, I began to meet some new friends. One of my new friends saw some of my artwork and asked if I ever took commissions for portraits. I had been drawing and painting faces ever since I can remember, but a portrait was another matter altogether. Trying to get a likeness seemed far beyond what I was capable of. I told her no. I did not paint portraits. She persisted however, and finally I told her I would attempt it. I took her photo into a tiny spare room that I was using as a studio. I put all of my pastels out and faced the paper on the easel. "If I can not capture this face in one hour, I am going to tell her it cannot be done" I said to no one in particular. Looking back on it now, I believe I was speaking to one in particular. God. I painted the little girls face in one hour, and it looked like her! Long story short.....I began to paint commissioned portraits in Monterey California. I painted 10 portraits before we had to up and move again. The funny part was that we were moving right back to where we had come from.......Bartlett TN.

Making the move back was also filled with sadness. Recently I had learned that Samantha had passed away. I found myself grieving for her family. I was frustrated with myself, because I had not done anything for this precious family when I had had the chance. What could I possibly give them now? The answer came as I drove through a very desolate, empty desert on the way back to Bartlett TN. Once again, I found myself thinking about Samantha and her family. I again pondered what I could have done for them. The difference was that this time I heard a voice ever so clearly.... "Oh but you can do something for the Williams. While you were in Monterey you learned how to paint portraits. You did not know that you could do that, but I did. You can paint a portrait of Samantha for her parents.....and give it to them as a gift from your heart to theirs" I sat in stunned silence knowing that the Lord had spoke to me. I could do this for her family. I had something to give them now, that I did not have before. I considered this for many days, but in the end knew that I had been given a mission.

After we had settled into our house and the packing was once again unpacked....hopefully for a very long time.....I contacted the pastor of our church and told him what I wanted to do. I was very nervous, and shy, so I asked him to approach the family on my behalf. He did and they were thrilled with the offer. I met with them and will never be able to put into words the suffering that they were going through. As they shared Samantha's life with me through photo's and words, it blessed us all. I painted Samantha's portrait. I poured my heart and soul into it. I have done numerous portraits since then, but Samantha's portrait will always stand out....because through her portrait God changed my heart!

He is finished!!! I am very pleased with the way his eyes turned out. They are so full of expression. It makes you wonder what he is thinking. I also love the pucker of his little mouth, and the way those chubby hands are holding that sucker. You know that he can't wait to pop it in his mouth. This one is very special! As always, the hand of God is so evident. My hands cannot paint without His direction.

I am beginning to develop the eyes. There is a certain look that I am trying to capture, and I am determined to succeed. I look at the painting from all angles now, making sure that my eyes are not deceiving me. As an artist you have to learn how to see. It sounds simple doesn't it. Well it is a lot harder than it sounds. I will paint a form thinking I know exactly how it looks only to find out later that I didn't "see" it right at all.

I admit he is still a little funny looking, but I can already tell he is moving in the right direction. I love all the colors that are available to me when I am using pastels. I feel like a kid in a candy shop when I am standing in front of the pastels in an art store. How hard it is to walk out with just what I need, when I really want to take them all home.

I started painting in pastels when I was about twelve. I still have some of those original pieces in my home. In the past I worked on pastel paper, but lately I have found that I love using Ampersand Pastelbords instead. They are amazing and allow me to create so many wonderful effects. I began this piece using very loose strokes to block in the composition. I also wanted lots of color in the beginning!

Comforting Baby

This minature painting measures only 5x7. Believe it or not, it is a challenge to work this small. I had a photograph that was taken at the beach one day. It was cold and the wind was blowing. My youngest son did not like it at all. We snapped a photo of his discontent, covered in a blanket, crying on my husbands shoulder. I wanted to capture that face so full of expression. I choose to use pastel on an Ampersand panel to achieve the look that I wanted. This piece was not only challenging, but a lot of fun to work on. I was able to complete it in under two hours. I hope that "Comforting Baby" will also evoke many memories for those that view it. It certainly does for me :)

Capturing The Moment

I love using the palette knife!! In this particular piece I wanted to capture all the movement and feeling that occurs when a child first steps into the swirling water of the ocean. The palette knife always forces me to use more paint than I would with a brush, and bolder strokes. This painting is composed of layer and layer of beautiful color intertwined with swirling movement. Even the childs body is made up of strokes that seem to have an energy of their own. Color always seems more vibrant to me when applied directly with the knife. I have developed a favorite among my palette knives and I must admit that I would be lost without it :)

"Girl In White"

Usually when I start a painting I begin drawing with paint. I have decided it might be a good thing to change my routine every now and then to ensure that I don't get too set in my ways. I started this painting by drawing in charcoal on an untoned white canvas. I was so pleased with how the charcoal drawing turned out, that it was hard to begin painting over it. I had a vision for a very fresh, innocent piece. In order to achieve this, I used a lot of white in this painting. The finished piece measures 10x8, and turned out far more charming than I ever imagined.

I have always enjoyed painting with the palette knife. I love the broad, chunky strokes that I can create. The color tends to come out more intense than when using a brush. With spring right around the corner, I couldn't help but create something extremely colorful and cheerful!

Pastels~ The Medium Of Gorgeous Color

I have been painting in pastels since I was about 12 years old. I remember starting out with oil pastels, which did not impress me. Then I found out about soft pastels. I bought my first box of grumbacher soft pastels and was hooked! I still have some pastels from that original set. The colors were fabulous and they blended beautifully. I loved the softness that I could create when using them in my paintings. I continue to love working in pastels. I now have the priveleage of teaching two pastel classes at Hobby Lobby. Each week the students create portraits using soft pastels on pastel boards. Every painting is unique, and I am always impressed with the work of the students. The above painting is a demonstration that I did for the class.

A Visit To BB Kings

Not very long ago, we had a visit from out of town family. We lunched at BB Kings on Beale street where one of my portraits is hanging. The portrait is of Corey Osborn and is hung in a wonderful spot where it can be enjoyed. Corey was a musical prodigy and had played at BB Kings since he was a young teenager. He died in a tragic accident a couple of years ago and the club where he had spent so much of his time and blessed with his talent wanted to honor him with a remembrance. I never had the privilege to meet him, but I was told he had a true heart for people.

Live Demo at Inspiration Art Gallery

Here are some photo's from my live demo on Saturday November 27th. I was at the Inspiration Art Gallery from 12:00-4:00 and was able to complete five paintings in that time. Two angels and three nativities. It was a wonderful experience!! I enjoyed meeting all the different people who came by.

The highlight of this experience was this ~ in a world where so much of our christmas focus is on buying gifts and santa, the true meaning of this season was put front and center for several hours. How encouraging to know that in 2010, I could still stand in a mall and present the passerby's with a beautiful glimpse of the christmas story. The baby who came from heaven to rescue us from the darkness. I love painting these Nativity scenes because I see the Lord's hand in each and every one.

"Anna and Evan" has taken many months to complete, but it is finally finished!! The painting measures 24x36, so it is understandable why it took so many hours to complete. This painting has been an incredible reminder to me of God's faithfulness and strength. Just like in life, there were times I was too tired to carry on, but God always carried me through. In our weakness He is strong!

I have been reading a book on one of my favorite artists John Singer Sargent. His work is absolutely breathtaking and always inspires me. How interesting to find out that even he became discouraged at times. He once told a friend that he might quit painting. The friend cried out in astonishment "Whatever will you do?" because as the friend said "Sargent was so exclusively an artist that one could think of no other occupation." This is exactly how I feel. There have been times when I have vowed to put away the paint brushes. There have also been times when I have actually laid them aside. But the question is "What will I do?" How can you tell an apple tree to stop producing apples? Being an artist is not merely what I do, it is what I was created to be. It colors everything in my world, my thoughts, my actions, even how I relate to God. I cannot stop being an artist, even if I tried. So whatever the future brings I will face it paintbrush in hand.

This is a portrait of two brothers. I love the light in this painting. Even though the viewer just catches a glimpse of the background, it is easy to see that they are surrounded by the great outdoors. I wanted to allow the brushstrokes to flow into one another in this painting, creating several soft edges. Ever since I was a child I have loved pairing red and blue together in my art work. This piece may be small in size (8x10), but it required lots of love and time to paint. It had to be just right.

Brennen is finished. I am so pleased with the way his portrait turned out!! I have captured that look that I will always love, no matter how old he gets. Patience is so hard for me when I get to this stage in the portrait. I want to hurry up and finish it. I also have a very bad habit of seeing all that still needs to be fixed instead of seeing all that is going right with the painting. This can be true of my life also. Brennen is very fair. He does not normally have a lot of color in his skin unless he is overheated. I have always been intrigued by how fair he is, and have wanted to capture his alabaster skin in a painting. Since he is so fair, I have chosen to put him in a red shirt so that I would have a wonderful contrast in this painting.

When painting a portrait I always have to remind myself to stay loose in the beginning. I have this bad habit of wanting to see the finished painting right away, which means that I can get detailed too quickly. If I get detailed too quickly I always have to go back and fix things. It is better to let the painting come into focus slowly. Patience. Will I ever learn it?

So many thoughts are running through my head while I am painting. I can get excited over the simplest things, especially when I begin to see the person emerging on my canvas. I find that browsing through my collection of art books offers me a world of inspiration and excites me to keep on with my current painting. I found the most wonderful book on Impressionism in a used book store. It was only $12 and in perfect condition. What a find. It made my day. I believe God gives us small desires of our heart, like my art book, to encourage us to keep on going. There is still joy in this world!

I always begin with a toned canvas. I love working on this color. I start drawing with the brush. For some reason I feel that drawing with a pencil is too stiff. It just doesn't flow. Burnt umber is my color of choice when I begin my drawing. So far it is looking good.

I visited a local colleges art museum the other day, and I left feeling very discouraged. The artwork had such negative, ugly images in it. I thought it was depressing. I want artwork that is uplifting. I know artwork is the voice of the artist and they have a right to speak. Everywhere I look I am faced with bleak situations. I refuse to allow my artwork to speak of despair. I want to use it to speak of hope and show the beauty that still exists in the world we live in!!

I enjoy painting sunflowers. I can adopt a very loose and carfree style when it comes to these amazing colored flowers. I want merely to capture a moment in time. When I get involved in a painting it is very hard to make myself stop and take a picture. Not only that, but I still want to "finish" it before I take pictures. I have to remind myself that the whole point of doing this is to watch the painting come to life, and that would be pretty hard if I only took photo's when it was finished. This young mans face is still a work in progress but I "made" myself take the photo :)

When working on a portrait with more than one person, I often feel that I have to spread myself out. I can't just paint on one face. I need to bring all the faces along so that they don't begin to look like separate portraits on the same canvas. But at the same time it is still fun to see the progress being made on each face. I am now in the "pushing and pulling" stage. Using the darks to push the shadows back and the lighter colors to pull other parts of the painting forward. I am also still refining features in order to get exact likenesses. Progress is being made :)

I am still adding all the darks and reds to the faces. This makes it seem as if they are all sunburned, but I have to have my darks established in order to add my lights.

Here is the finished painting. What a challenge! This painting has helped move me through a difficult time in my life. It seems this year has been filled with a lot of sorrow and loss. I have had to answer some tough questions about my own faith. Do I love the Lord simply because of what He does for me? Am I expecting Him to be my big genie in the sky giving me whatever I desire? Or do I love Him because He is God and I am not? He commands the universe and I do not. I love the Lord for who He is, not for what He does for me. I love Him because He is my hope. Hard times will come and go, but the Lord will never leave me or forsake me. What a wonderful comfort that is.

The painting is starting to take on life. With so many faces to develop, it takes a little longer to see all the changes that I want to make. I am looking forward to seeing how it all comes together. The canvas is a 20x24. Back to work.

This is the very beginning stages of the painting. When I begin a painting I feel as if I am stepping onto a roller coaster ride. Buckle the seat belt and off you go. Once you are on the ride, you cannot get off until it is over. There are highs, lows, fast curves, moments of exhilaration, and moments of fear. At the end you step off, completely thrilled and excited. You did it! And then it starts all over with the next painting. The secret is that I love it and couldn't stop painting if I tried!

Sometimes I feel like a plastic surgeon. It seems as if I am always moving things around -eyes, nose, mouth, and sometimes the ear. Little changes here and there in order to capture the exact features and expression that I want. I am now listening to a book that I adored as a child. "The Little Princess". The woman reading the story has the perfect voice for it. This may be a childrens book, but it contains many character building truths. I am going to rest my eyes for now, and start again tommorrow.

I love the simple joys. In today's high tech world that may be hard to understand. As long as I can paint in my studio, with a cup of coffee, surrounded by things that inspire me, I am content. I also love to read. I have had a passion for books ever since I can remember. I am often torn between painting and reading. My solution has been to listen to audiobooks while I paint. I love hearing stories read to me as I work on my portraits. Since this portrait's subjects are two little girls, I have been listening to "Dancing Shoes" by Noel Streatfield. What a joy to revisit a story that I read as a girl. I am looking forward to making more progress on the painting today :)
